Premiere String Quartet recently performed three Candlelight Concerts by Fever at All Saints Chapel, Eastbourne. All performances took place in the same space across one evening, allowing the programme to develop while keeping the setting consistent.

All Saints Chapel is a compact venue with a clear, natural acoustic. The candlelight format suited the space well, providing a focused environment for listening without distracting from the music itself.

Christmas Programmes

The first two concerts were built around Christmas repertoire. The programme moved between classical and contemporary material, including Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker, alongside arrangements of Last Christmas and All I Want for Christmas Is You.

For these performances, Premiere String Quartet focused on clarity and balance, keeping the arrangements simple and allowing familiar melodies to sit naturally within a string quartet texture. The aim was not to alter the character of the music, but to present it in a way that suited both the venue and the format of a candlelight concert.

The final concert shifted away from seasonal material and towards a set based on Adele’s music, arranged for string quartet. These pieces were written to be pared back and direct, relying on phrasing and ensemble rather than dramatic reinterpretation.

In this setting, Premiere String Quartet worked closely with the acoustics of the chapel, allowing quieter moments to carry without forcing projection. The arrangements were designed to translate vocal lines into string writing while maintaining the structure and pacing of the original songs.
